Dongguan, China, has long been a trusted global manufacturing hub for apparel. After months of searching, I finally found a manufacturer based in Dongguan with an office in Hong Kong, and I visited the factory in person.
Through meetings with the design team and pattern makers (led by a manager from Hong Kong), I found them to be incredibly patient and dedicated to meeting my needs. Even though my designs were entirely new to the market and featured complex craftsmanship, and despite my background in interior design meaning my drawings weren't in traditional fashion formats, they guided me patiently every step of the way. They even took me to the fabric market so I could see firsthand how each fabric was carefully selected from high-quality suppliers. Honestly, without the help of Eddie, Master Li, Master Cao, Xana, and Ting, none of this would have been possible.
And no, this is not a sweatshop. Employees work from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, with a 1.5-hour lunch break that includes time for a nap. I even had lunch with the team and saw firsthand that the entire office and factory turned off their lights right on schedule for rest.
