Fact: In some communities (e.g. in Central Africa), it took an average of 5 adults, and up to 15 caregivers in a single day, to care for a newborn.
Fact: Some mothers are biologically unable to breastfeed. In older times, goat's milk was commonly used as a supplement, and in many cultures, wet nurses were shared across families.
Raising a child was never meant to be a 1:1 duty. No matter how independent or introverted you are, whether you find the door closed or you've closed it yourself, there is always another window open for you along your motherhood journey. If not family, then friends. If no friends understand you, then neighbours. And online support is far wider and more powerful than you might imagine.
Since I was pregnant, I joined almost every Facebook group I could find: Gestational Diabetes, Finding a Good Doula, Torticollis, Helmet Babies, Breastfeeding Support, Baby Carriers, same month and year mom groups, Anxiety etc. I posted often and am grateful for every bit of input from those communities.
I've always been a lone wolf, but I'm glad motherhood led me back to old friends who had become mamas too. I found myself far more open to strangers than I ever expected, and most of those connections not felt forced. They came from something genuine, one mama to another.
If you are a new mom, remember: you are not alone. And please, do not do this alone.
